This suburb has one of the older stories of any place on our patch, tracing back to a government farm established here in 1791-92, among the earliest European settlement sites on the mainland.

What's standing today is a lot more recent than that, mostly a settled, family-oriented rail suburb that grew through the post-war decades with double-brick and brick-veneer cottages, plus plenty of fibro on standard blocks.

Aurelia Street and the older shops beside the station mark the original heart of the suburb, the kind of streets where a house has often had one or two owners in its whole life.

Toongabbie railway station opened back in 1880 and was electrified in 1955, and the housing radiating out from it dates largely from around that second milestone through to the 1980s.
